Event 4 Pumping at Whitlingham? Light wind and sunshine were the order of the day for the last Eastern region Team 15 event this year.at Whitlingham broad. 23 competitors took part in up to seven races. A cross-shore force 1 gave the competitors lots of pumping exercise. The hosts Norwich Force 8ths had nine team members this time, with many of the regulars having rugby or other school related activities. Special mention must go to Aaron Murphy who, after suffering a broken leg in a rugby match last year, played his first game in the morning (which his team won) and then turned up to race after lunch, making the last race of the day, which he won. Well done Aaron. Alton had nine team members for this event and were very keen to win so that they could take the series title. Once again .the competition was hot between them and hosts Norwich Force 8th. Lakeside managed to bring four people, and Tallington was, once again, represented by Charly Sissons. Tom Bailey borrowed the eastern regions new techno and 6.8 rig for this event, bringing the Technos up to a fleet of four and the 6.8s to six overall. Light winds mean lots of short races With only light winds being forecast, the race courses were kept small but in the normal format of out and back for the 3.5 and 4.5 fleets and variations on a box course for the larger rigs. After a gruelling seven races,12 year old Matthew Barton, from Alton Water, won the 3.5 fleet. He won five of the seven races and discarded a 2nd and 3rd position - a very strong showing by anyones standards. Sam Gascoigne (Lakeside Loafers) was second, scoring one victory with six 2nd places. Third overall, and the other race winner, was Kate Vavasour, aged 12, sailing for Norwich Force 8th. The 4.5 fleet also had seven races .This fleet was dominated by Bryony Bennett-lloyd, representing the Force 8ths. Bryony won six of the seven races, tying for victory in race 5 with Jack Vanden Berg Hider. They couldnt be separated on the line, so a tie was called. Hattie took full advantage of a slip by Bryony to win the second race. Hattie and Conner Jones tied for third place overall with 14 points each. Conner, sailing for Lakeside Loafers, eventually took the place on count back. Second overall in the fleet went to Jack Vanden Berg- Hider, representing Alton Water Wipeouts. The 5.5 fleet had four races with four competitors. Jo Harley decided to compete as a 5.5 again and was pushed very close by newcomer Chloe Smith, The victor was decided by discards with only one point separating the two. 6.8 Technos prove increasingly popular The 6.8 fleet has shifted from more open 6.8 at the beginning of the year to more technos at the end. Tom Bennet Lloyd had it all his own way until Aaron turned up. Tom taking three victories to Aarons one. Rebecca Calder had another strong showing with two 2nd places and finished 2nd overall. Tristan Hughes showed incredible energy in pumping and was rewarded with 3rd overall and 2nd Techno Charley Sissons once again represented Tallington Lakes and finished 3rd Techno. That's it in the East All of the placers and merit award winners received prizes from Bic and Ricks Windsurfing. A big thank you to all the competitors, parents and helpers who have made Team 15 in the East a success for another year. See you all at the Zone Championships. Regards, Graham. The Green Blue is an environmental awareness initiative by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association. One of its aims is to educate and promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants. Some of the initiatives have a relevance to windsurfers - especially in achieving cleaner seas and beaches.
